10 October Events and Holidays You'll Want to Know More About

...so much more than Halloween!

By "Sunshine Sheri" | Publisher, Macaroni KID Galveston October 3, 2022

From fall football to trick-or-treat ... October brings with it all sorts of annual celebrations and traditions! We love this month too because it's a time of transition: The weather cools, the leaves change, and we can take our favorite cozy sweaters out of storage and make our favorite apple and/or pumpkin desserts.

But that's not all that's happening this month!  From Breast Cancer Awareness Month to Mental Illness Awareness Week, there are lots of important observances taking place in October, along with fun holidays to celebrate, like Make a Difference Day.

Here are 10 events and holidays our diverse Macaroni KID families will be marking this month:

1. Breast Cancer Awareness Month | October 1st - 31st

Breast cancer is by far the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women, according to the Centers for Disease Control. About 250,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Each of the women and men diagnosed has their own story. Read Angela Duncan's life story here. We are proud to have her as the Apollo Beach - Ruskin - Wimauma, Fla. Macaroni KID publisher.

3. Mental Illness Awareness Week | October 2nd - 8th

One in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental illness each year and 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year, according to the National Association of Mental Illness. Now, if you need help or know someone in need, you can reach out immediately for help. You can dial “988” to reach trained crisis counselors anywhere in the United States if you need help in a mental health, substance use, or suicide crisis anywhere in the United States. Learn more about 988 here.

4. National Night Out | October 4th

During the event, neighborhoods throughout Galveston and across the state of Texas are asked to spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters, and city officials. Events such as neighborhood walks, cookouts, block parties will all occur simultaneously throughout the city.

5. National Pastor/Clergy Appreciation Month | October 9th

Although October is recognized as Pastor Appreciation Month, the idea grew for emphasizing one specific day to nationally pay tribute to our clergy. This day became known as Pastor Appreciation Day; also referred to as Clergy Appreciation Day.  This day of showing national gratitude for clergy members is celebrated on the second Sunday in October.  Cards of appreciation are a great way to show honor.
